JUBA – A South Sudanese civil society activist has called for the immediate release of the former Juba city mayor, Kalisto Ladu, a day after his arrest and detention.

Police authorities told Sudans Post that the ex-mayor was arrested and detained by the National Security Service (NSS) under unclear circumstances on Sunday.

Edmund Yakani has urged authorities to ensure Ladu is released and produced before a competent court if he was found to have been in conflict with the law.

“The call for the release of former Mayor Kalisto Ladu is for the sake of respecting civil and political rights as enshrined in the UN convention on civil and political rights, which our country became a state party to on 24th February 2023,” he said.

According to the outspoken activist, arbitrary detention of citizens undermine preparation for the country’s general elections scheduled for December 2024.

“The arrest of former mayor of Juba City Kalisto Ladu is a violation of civic and political space and violation of the Bill of Rights, the presidency directives of 22 October 2022 and resolutions of 6th and 7th Governors forums of 2023,” he said.

The First Deputy Speaker of the national assembly, Oyet Nathaniel also demanded the immediate release of for former mayor upon hearing of his arrest.

Oyet, however, told Sudans Post that failure to arraign Ladu before a competent court of law would be regarded as illegal detention, attracting punishment.

Sources say the former mayor has been critical about rampant land grabbing in Central Equatoria State and called on citizens in the region to fight for their land.
