JUBA – A prominent South Sudan activist has condemned the reported extension of the transitional period by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny, saying no one has right to extend lifespan of the government apart from the people of South Sudan.
Yesterday, Sudan Tribune quoted an unnamed senior government official as saying that the parties to the revitalized peace agreement have agreed to the extension of the transitional period for either 28 or 32 months.
Separately, the Sudanese foreign minister confirmed in an interview with Radio Tamazuj that President Kiir and Machar who is the leader of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement have agreed to the extension of the transition because the remaining time is not enough for the completion of the remaining provision of the revitalized peace agreement.
“The remaining period is not enough for the elections to take place, so the idea to extend the transitional period came up during the discussions. This is what the parties have agreed on, and the president will announce it,” Ali al-Sadiq who is on a visit to South Sudan said.
In reaction, Activist Wani Michael who resigned last year as the youth representative of the National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC) said the people of South Sudan has the right to decide if the transitional period is to be extended, but not the government nor the regional bloc IGAD which mediated the revitalized peace agreement.
“The first people to approve an extension of the current government are the PEOPLE of SOUTH SUDAN not IGAD through proxy means. Power belong to the PEOPLE of SOUTH SUDAN, it is them to decide not you IGAD. Don’t be used to legitimize a government against its people,” he wrote on Twitter.
“The extension of the Transitional Period by the Parties sponsored by IGAD is purely a COUP against the people of South Sudan. What a precedent that leaders can unilaterally decide on their own how, when and why to rule citizens,” he added.
