JUBA – A group of unknown criminals in South Sudan’s capital Juba have gang-raped a 55-year-old woman, and then killed her by breaking her neck in an incident that occurred at Juba’s Hai Referendum, according to several members and neighbors.

Speaking to Juba’s Al Watan newspaper on Thursday afternoon, the victim’s son said the mother who was going to throw away garbage didn’t return, only to be informed by the police in the morning that an old woman was found dead and gang-raped by a group of more than five criminals.

“When I came home in the evening on Wednesday night at 8 PM, I asked where was she [the victim], I was told by my sister that she went to throw away garbage and we waited until 11 PM and when she didn’t return, we went to bed,” the victim’s son told Al Watan’s Michael Christopher.

“In the morning, I went to look for her and before I left the compound, I met police and they told me of an old woman who they said had been raped and then killed. When I go there, I unfortunately found that it was my mother,” he added.

The family member further blamed the police for inaction to control the crimes saying the incident took place just a few meters away from a police station in the Juba’s neighborhood of Hai Referendum.

“The police station is less than 100 meters from where the incident took place. We could not say anything because the police are now clear that they don’t want to protect the area against these dangerous criminals,” he further said.
