Last week, South Sudan’s main armed opposition SPLM-IO withdraw from peace implementation mechanisms as well as those monitoring the implementation of the agreement over continued attacks on its bases by SSPDF.
The following day, South Sudan People’s Defense Forces attacked several SPLA-IO positions in Upper Nile and Unity states raising fears of further escalation between the two key peace signatories.
But instead of called for a meeting of the presidency to discuss the escalation, Kiir hosted delegation from foreign countries including from China as well as business people from the United States.
In a statement, prominent South Sudanese activist and government critic Wani Michael said President Salva Kiir Mayardit is “the most unserious” head of state and lamented him for having “the audacity” to host foreign visitors when there is war in the country.
“President Kiir is the most unserious Head of State and Government, with all the confusions and fears of the Country returning back to war,” Wani said in a brief social media statement posted on Facebook.
“He still has the audacity to host the Chinese and others at J1 but not his Vice Presidents or Parties to the Agreement for a crisis meeting to address the current unprecedented situation. One might conclude that President Kiir and his group are behind the current predicaments in the Country,” he added.
