Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Joseph Malek Arop, presented the bill to parliament on Monday, marking its reintroduction after it was sent back for revisions in 2020.
The bill was initially issued as a Provisional Order by President Salva Kiir in 2020 and subsequently signed into law in May 2021.
According to Oliver Mori Benjamin, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Information and Communication, the Cybercrimes and Misuse Bill 2024 seeks to protect and prevent crimes committed through computer systems, the internet, and related activities.
“The bill aims to address the growing threat of cybercrime in South Sudan and provide a legal framework for prosecuting offenders,” Mori said.
“The second topic on the agenda was also a presentation of another bill, the cybercrime and computer misuse bill 2024 in its first reading stage,” said Mori.
In addition to the Cyber Crimes bill, the parliament also considered the Audit Chamber Act 2011, amendment bill 2024.
According to him, this bill outlines procedures for auditing government accounts and ensuring financial accountability.
Both bills were referred to the respective parliamentary committees for further review and are expected to be presented for a second reading within two weeks.
