Deadly attack by Murle on Uror county kills 3, over 3,000 herds of cattle stolen

Ex-Bieh state governor says attack constitutes grave violation to the recently concluded Jonglei-Pibor peace conference.

JUBA – A deadly attack on a village in Uror County of Jonglei state on Monday by suspected armed youth from Murle has resulted in the killing of at least three people and the wounding of two others, while leaving three thousands herds of cattle stolen, according to local authorities.

Moses Majok Gatluak, former governor of the defunct Bieh state said in a report addressed to vice-president James Wani Igga who is also the head of Jonglei-Pibor peace committee that the attack constitutes a violation to resolutions of the recently concluded peace conference and urged the government to intervene and recover the stolen cattle and tell the Murle to cease other attacks in the future.

“Your Excellency, First and foremost allow me to forward to your Excellency office the aforementioned report about the killing of the three people (3) and wounded of other two people in Uror County yesterday on the 15th February 2021 by the Murle criminals. Some armed youth from Murle had attacked the quoted area around four (4) PM South Sudan local time and managed to seize/raided more than three (3) thousand herds of cattle which are not yet recovered to date,” he said.

“We had just finished the peace conference between communities of Jonglei State and Pibor Administrative areas whereby they (communities) have agreed to cease the activities relating cattle raiding, revenge attacks, child abductions and other volatilities, and criminal activities between themselves.

“In pursuant to the quoted peace conference, I am hereby reporting the incident to your Excellency office as the concerned authority and recommending to your office to approach the leadership of the Murle community and the Administrative area to effectively implement the conference resolutions in favor of peace in the area.”
