BENTIU – The death toll from Monday’s clash between South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) has risen to seven, with eleven others wounded.
Unity State information minister David Gai Jiejor confirmed to Sudans Post that at least four government soldiers, including a captain, were killed in what he described as an attack on the governor’s convoy by SPLA-IO rebels.
Gai refuted rumors that the division four military intelligence chief had succumbed to injuries, stating that nine SSPDF personnel were wounded, including the intelligence chief, the wildlife director, and another unnamed major.
“The SPLA-IO attack on the governor’s convoy resulted in the killing of four soldiers, including a captain in the convoy. Nine SSPDF soldiers were wounded, including the state intelligence chief and the state director of wildlife services,” he clarified.
“The false propaganda about the intelligence chief succumbing to injuries is completely untrue. He has been hospitalized and is responding well to treatment,” Jiejor concluded.
Meanwhile, a senior SPLA-IO officer, speaking anonymously due to media restrictions, told Sudans Post in a phone call from Garia on the Sudanese border that the armed opposition group had lost at least three soldiers with two others wounded.
He disclosed that two soldiers were found at the entrance of the Nyuelnyuel base and killed during the SSPDF attack.
“Our death toll is three soldiers. Two were found at the base entrance, and one died in an explosion thrown by the SSPDF during their attack,” the SPLA-IO officer said on condition of anonymity.
The officer further revealed that the SPLA-IO has now withdrawn its forces from Nyuelnyuel to Garia, their former base, along the Sudanese border.
“To avoid escalating the conflict and endangering civilians, we have redeployed our forces to Garia. Some remain in the forest for reconnaissance,” he added.
