Dozens feared dead as gunmen from Warrap attack southern Abyei

Dozens of people are feared dead after heavily armed youth group from neighboring Warrap State launched a deadly attack on several areas in southern Abyei this morning, eyewitnesses speaking to Sudans Post on phone said.

JUBA – Dozens of people are feared dead after heavily armed youth group from neighboring Warrap State launched a deadly attack on several areas in southern Abyei this morning, eyewitnesses speaking to Sudans Post on phone said.

“As I am speaking to you, there is fighting. There is an attack by people, young men, from Warrap State and they have been repulsed but the fighting is still ongoing. The fighting at Agok in Aneet town as has subsidized, but the one in Juoljok is still going on,” one resident of Aneet said.

Another resident of Abyei said the attacks took place inside Madiing, Mabuony, Juoljok as well as Agok Airstrip Estate inside Aneet and that the attackers have all been repulsed and local youth are guarding roads leading to Abyei from southern directions of the disputed territory.

“The areas that were attacked this morning by armed men from Warrap State are as follows: Madiing, Mabuony, Juoljok, Agok Airstrip Estate in Aneit area,” the Eye Witness said.

“The attackers have been repulsed back from all areas they attacked. The Abyei youth are reported to be patrolling all those places now,” the source added.

When contacted by Sudans Post, Honorable Deng Ajak Miyen, the minister of information and communication of Abyei Administrative Area, confirmed the attack and said authorities there are still gathering information including the casualties.

“Yes, there is an attack from the direction of Warrap State but as I am speaking to you, we as government of Abyei are still gathering information regarding the attack and the casualties are still being counted. Everything for publication will be available at 2:00PM,” Hon. Ajak said.
