Lobong who is also the chairman of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Eastern Equatoria, made the revelation during a rally attended by hundreds of members of the SPLM party in Eastern Equatoria state capital Torit on Sunday which was also attended by SPLM Secretary-General Peter Lam Both.
“We are pronouncing that we are ready, we are ready for elections in 2023 because it would help end the perpetual transitional periods that South Sudan has gone through since its formation,” the senior SPLM party member, said.
The top SPLM member also urged the SPLM party to hold its national convention in Eastern Equatoria state because “it had previously hosted some of the most successful and important events during the liberation days.”
Lobong the 1994 SPLM National Convention held in Chukudum, that led to the reorganization of the Movement, Senior Officers Conference held in Moyo Sukun, that led to the capture of many areas in the country, the Civil Authority Conference held at New Kush and the Kings and Chiefs Conference held at New Site, that restored the unity of South Sudanese as they marched towards nationhood.
For his part, Mark Nyipuoch, a prominent member of the SPLM party, said he also endorse President Salva Kiir Mayardit and said: “elections must be conducted in 2023 to end rebellion in the world’s youngest country.”
