In a suspension letter, the Nagero commissioner, Gabriel Ferdinando Nvolo, suspended Mr. Mungo for three months with half pay for his failure to provide an explanation for the missing SSP eighteen million.
“This order is issued as county order No. 5 of the Transitional Constitution of Western Equatoria State 2011 as amended in 2015 as a 3-month suspension order with half pay to Mr. Peter John Mungo, the county education cashier, with immediate effect from the date of signature of this order,” the order reads in part.
“He, Peter John Mungo, failed to submit accountability for the SSP 18,000,000 cash received in Nagero County Education Department as salaries for primary and secondary school teachers for October 2023,” it added.
According to Commissioner Nvolo, some classified and unclassified staff in the education department have also not been paid their October 2023 wages, although money was sent to the office concerned.
However, it remains unclear how many teachers have not received their October salary.
Meanwhile, the suspended officer is yet to comment on the alleged misappropriation of teachers’ funds.
Recently, the national ministry of General Education dispatched a salary oversight committee to states to screen the payroll for ghost names and eliminate the names of unclassified staff as payment of October began.
