TORIT – The chairperson of the Magwi Hope Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) highlighted that war has severely hindered education and contributed to the low level of literacy in South Sudan.
In her speech, Mrs. Aling Vicky remarked that during the liberation struggle, students had to attend lessons under trees, contrasting this with the current, more conducive learning environment in well-built classrooms.
She urged primary eight candidates to show discipline toward teachers from different schools over the five examination days, expressing confidence they would succeed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ochan Otto Johnson, head teacher of Magwi Hope Nursery and Primary School, commended parents for supporting the school by paying fees despite the ongoing economic crisis.
He announced that 61 students, including 35 boys and 26 girls, were prepared to sit for the national primary eight exams this year.
Mr. Odinga Mathew Ogero, sub-chief of Amika Boma, noted that illness has posed a significant challenge for the school throughout the term. He added that many teachers and parents fail to follow up when students are admitted to health facilities, leaving them unattended.
Pastor Oryema Richard of the African Inland Church in Magwi quoted Psalm 112:1-2, saying, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” He encouraged students to place their trust in God, requesting parents to pray for their children during the exam period.
Amika Boma Chief Mr. Okeny Michael Okumu urged students to continue their education, citing local graduate Laker Angel, who recently earned a bachelor’s degree in education.
He advised students to be respectful and disciplined, warning them not to bring negative behaviors from Alliance Nursery and Primary School into Magwi Payam.
He also urged the school not to send students home during exam time, emphasizing the importance of focusing on performance.
Okeny Thomas, head teacher of Magwi Senior Secondary School and the event’s guest of honor, noted that the farewell party symbolized a “goodbye” for students leaving the school.
He encouraged candidates to assist their families once they completed their exams.
The speakers made these remarks during the farewell ceremony for candidates at Magwi Hope Nursery and Primary School.
