AWEIL – Police authorities in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have detained at least 11 people following a land dispute that erupted into violence between two clans in Aweil North County on Tuesday.
County Commissioner Kiir Chan Wol and State Governor Tong Aken Ngor rushed to the scene in Korok to address the situation.
Speaking to Sudans Post on Wednesday, Wol emphasized the importance of restoring peace in the area. He confirmed the arrests of eleven people suspected of involvement in the fighting.
“We have detained eleven people to prevent further violence. It is something we do not condone,” said Commissioner Wol. “Those responsible will face legal consequences as many people were injured. This is why we want them to face the law.”
The disputed land in Korok has been a recurring source of conflict. Commissioner Wol indicated that discussions with local traditional chiefs and leaders are underway, with the hope of finding a permanent solution to the dispute.
This incident follows a similar land dispute in Aweil West last month. The state government urges citizens to resolve conflicts peacefully and avoid resorting to violence.
