WARRAP – Police in South Sudan’s Warrap State have detained 11 suspects accused of looting property belonging to Sudanese nationals during recent protests, officials said.

The arrests follow widespread protests across South Sudan sparked by the alleged killings of South Sudanese civilians by the Sudanese Armed Forces in Sudan.

Speaking to Sudans Post today, Warrap Police Inspector Atem Deng Atem said the suspects are accused of looting items of different kinds.

“We have initially detained 4 suspects who climbed the building of the revenue officials and made away with 38 million SSP. And the other 7 are suspects who are accused of looting the items,” said Atem Deng Atem, the inspector of police in the area.

Atem said the police were working to recover stolen items, including 33 million South Sudanese pounds looted from a market in Twic County.

“Kindly bear with us, hand over the items before we step into your house,” the office admonishes or warns the citizens.

Atem said the suspects would be arraigned in court.

In a separate incident, officials said they had recovered 68 heads of cattle out of 200 stolen from Arab nomads last week.

Atem said police were pursuing the suspects, who were believed to have fled to remote areas of the county.

Meanwhile, in Aweil Town, Northern Bahr El Gazal State, police authorities reported recovering dozens of assorted items, including mattresses, household items, generators, and clothes, from looters.

Guot Guot Akol, the spokesperson for the police in Northern Bahr El Gazal State, told journalists on Tuesday that the search for stolen goods was ongoing.
