JUBA – South Sudan’s Minister of Health, Elizabeth Achuei, has reinstated her ministry’s undersecretary, Dr. Victoria Anib Majur, who was suspended by the minister last year, and apologized to the public and donor community for the suspension.
Last October, Achuei issued a ministerial order suspending Dr. Victoria Anib Majur from her position after an apparent power struggle between the two resulted in the involvement of Vice-President Hussein Abdelbaggi allegedly in favor of the undersecretary.
In a ministerial order dated January 13th, 2022, the minister said the Dr. Victoria was back in her position with immediate effect, but did not give reason for a 90-day investigation process that he had ordered.
Speaking during the commemoration of the World Neglected Tropical Diseases day in Juba over the weekend, Minister Achuei Apologized and said her actions last year may have been the cause of disappointment among the donor community and the public.
“I heard a good comment earlier about me and the Undersecretary. Yes the mistake is done but the big thing is when you don’t learn from the mistake. I am assuring all of you and our partners for the disappointment done during our struggle for something that we don’t know where it was coming from,” the minister said.
“Forgive us; we will try to work hard to catch up. I believe we [have] learnt from our mistakes and the good news [is] we are women. We are mothers and mothers always think twice,” she added.
For her part, the undersecretary Dr. Victoria Anib thanked Achuei “for demonstrating leadership and thank you for that honor. What a man can do a woman can do and even better.”
