PORT SUDAN, SEPTEMBER 11, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Sudan’s embattled military leader General Abdelfattah Al-Burhan on Monday morning travelled to the Eritrean capital Asmara in his fourth foreign trip since the outbreak of conflict in April.
In a statement seen by Sudans Post, the country’s Transitional Sovereign Council headed by Al-Burhan said the military leader will hold talks during the visit with the Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki on bilateral relations.
“The President of the [Transitional] Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, this morning headed to the Eritrean capital, Asmara, for an official visit,” the statement seen by Sudans Post reads in part.
“The President of the Council will hold, during the visit, talks with Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki, determine the course of bilateral relations between the two countries, discuss ways to strengthen them, and issues of interest will be clarified among the participants,” the statement added.
He was seen off at Port Sudan International Airport by Lt. Gen. Muhammad Al-Ghali Ali Youssef, Secretary-General of the Council, and several senior government officials.
He is accompanied by the minister of foreign affairs, Ali Al-Sadiq, and the country’s intelligence chief Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Mufaddal.
The visit comes as fighting escalates between the army and the rebellious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
Since fleeing the capital Khartoum for Port Sudan, the temporary capital of Sudan, Al-Burhan has visited three countries Egypt, South Sudan, and Qatar in an effort to garner regional support as war enters its 5th month.
The visit to Eritrea is seen as part of this effort.
