The government in Addis Ababa last week announced a unilateral truce to allow humanitarian access for the northern Tigray region. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front reciprocated the government decision but has reportedly continued to deny aid entry into the region.
In a statement, the Ethiopian government confirmed the delivery of aid by air to Mekelle and said that the transportation of humanitarian needs by air from Addis Ababa indicate the government commitment to the declaration of humanitarian truce it declared last week.
“It is to be recalled that the Ethiopian government has declared a truce for the humanitarian needs of the people in the Tigray region. Since the decision, the Ethiopian government has taken a variety of actions. Allowing a full week of air transportation to several international humanitarian organizations was one of the initiatives,” the Government Communication Service said in the statement.
“Accordingly, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, money, and nutritional supplements began to be transported by air as much as possible. In addition, the government has also permitted other humanitarian aid to be transported by air. In this regard, the government has taken immediate action, unless there is a lack of capacity or a delay in the operation of the charities,” it added.
The government statement said Addis Ababa has cleared a 43-truck aid convoy of the World Food Program (WFP) to pass by land using the Abaala highway, but the rebel group has not allowed to entry of aid into the northern region marking anther significant stumbling block as people starve.
“To expand access to humanitarian assistance, the World Food Program (WFP) has been allowed to transport 43 trucks of food aid to people in need in the Tigray region via Abala Road. Of this, 20 trucks are stationed in Semera town of Afar region carrying humanitarian aid,” the government said.
“The Ethiopian government has been using all available means to rescue its citizens in the Tigray region but has not been able to secure the cooperation of the other party. The 43-truck food aid authorized to the World Food Program (WFP) had not been transported to the Tigray region due to the closure of Abala Road by TPLF militants,” the statement added.
If the TPLF wanted aid to come in from Semera why have they spent the last 90 days attacking innocent Afar civilians in their home areas. They are the world’s biggest hypocrites.
TPLF wants to starve Tigray population just to control them and claim Ethiopian government doesn’t care. Hypocrites. Human life is sacrosanct and all power and dominance is not that relevant when people are dying of starvation. The people of Tigray mainly diaspora should notice this evil act and break their subjugation and silence
This is a very irresponsible report by Sudan Post. Primary sources of information as to who is blocking aid from entering Tigray would have been employees of hundreds of aid organizations, which btw have been literally begging the federal government to lift the blockage. TPLF is not starving the people of Tigray. There are more than 10 routes to Tigray, all controlled by Abiy Ahmed and only the Afar route is in question here. Shameful report.
