JUBA — A senior member of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) has been appointed by the Intergovernmental Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) as head of a peace monitoring body in South Sudan.

According to Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, the spokesperson of the IGAD executive secretary, Lieutenant General Asrat Denero of the ENDF has been appointed as the Chairperson of South Sudan’s Ceasefire & Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring & Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM).

“He is globally respected as a highly competent & professional officer,” Mohamud said of the renowned Ethiopian army commander.

Established in January 2014 as “The Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s (IGAD) Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (MVM)” to monitor the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) signed by the Parties in January 2014, it had transitioned to become the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) following the signing of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (ARCSS) in August 2015.

The Ceasefire & Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring & Verification Mechanism reports on the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in South Sudan.
