JUBA – Authorities in the Ruweng Administrative Area have reported an attack on an Ethiopian driver by suspected armed youth from Unity State over the weekend. The driver, traveling from Pariang town to Unity oilfield, sustained injuries in the assault.
Simon Chol, the Minister of Information and Telecommunication for the Ruweng Administrative Area, confirmed the incident to Sudans Post on Monday. The attack occurred early Saturday morning at 6:12 a.m. between Unity oilfield and Pariang town.
“The attackers were coming from Unity State, but we don’t know their exact location as the area borders Guit, Rubkona, and Mayom counties in Unity State,” Chol said.
“We suspect the youth from Unity State are responsible, and we appeal to the Unity State government to arrest those criminals who are causing insecurity along the border between Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area,” he added.
Chol added that the injured driver was taken to the Unity oilfield health facility for treatment and noted that the assailants did not steal anything from the vehicle during the attack but appeared intent on injuring the driver.
James Element Juol, the Commissioner of Rubkona County, denied reports of the attack when contacted by Sudans Post on Monday.
“I don’t have information about any armed youth attacking a vehicle or injuring a driver traveling from Pariang town to Unity oilfield. These are not our youth from Unity State,” Juol said.
Juol emphasized the unity between the two regions, dismissing claims that Unity State youth were behind the attack.
“We are one community, and nobody here supports insecurity between the Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area administrations,” he said.
