The United Arab Emirates is believed to be a close ally of Prime Minister Ahmed’s government in the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia with various reports suggesting that UAE drones helped government push back rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) following its advance on Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, last year.
In a brief statement on Twitter, Prime Minister Abiy’s office said the Prime Minister arrived in Abu Dhabi along with a delegation and met with the Emirati Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who is also the de facto ruler of Abu Dhabi.
“Prime Minister @AbiyAhmedAli and his delegation travelled to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for an official working visit. The Prime Minister met with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss issues of mutual interest,” the Prime Minister’s Office said on Twitter.
For his part, PM Abiy Ahmed expressed “My greatest appreciation to my brother His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan@MohamedBinZayed for the warm welcome accorded to my delegation and I.”
He said the two sides “discussed bilateral and regional issues as well as explored ways of further strengthening our ties.”
