JUBA – Former SPLA-IO external intelligence chief Major-General William Deng Gach has resigned from the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and joined the SPLM-IO Kitgwang faction led by former SPLA-IO chief of staff General Simon Gatwech Dual.
“I Maj. Gen. William Deng Gach do hereby give my full support to the Kitgwang Declaration; and would like to join 1st Let. Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual and his deputy 1st Lt. Gen. Johnson Olony Thumbo to work with them hand to hand and continue the struggle along with our comrades in the struggle under their strong wise leadership from now on ward,” he said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.
General Deng didn’t give any reason for his resignation, but only said he “no longer under the leadership of the farmer C-N-C of SPLM in Opposition (SPLM/IO) Dr. Riek Machar Teny from today on ward.”
General Simon Gatwech recently attempted to remove First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny from being the leader of the main armed opposition group. He made the attempt public in a communiqué that followed a three-day gathering of top SPLA-IO commander at Kitgwang, Magenis, on August 4, 2021.
