JUBA – A South Sudan diplomat at the country’s embassy in the Ugandan capital Kampala, has said that former spokesman of General Paul Malong Awan, Emmanuel Sunday De John, met South Sudan’s security chief General Akol Koor in Kampala on September 10.
The official said the rebel official had since July been in contact with security officials in Juba and has met at least – twice the course of 2019 – four senior security agents including Akool in Kampala.
“There is no problem in Sunday meeting anyone in the government and his meetin with General Akool Koor on September ten is in the interest of peace,” the diplomat said on condition of anonymity because he is not permitted to speak to the media.
“The meeting took place here in Kampala and it was fruitful. This is how I can call it,” the official added.
Another opposition official who said he was suspicious of Sunday’s activities said phone number for the opposition official could not be reached between September 7 and September 12.
He said he couldn’t rule out the possibility of Sunday being in Uganda or else where within that period.
“He might be in Kampala or anywhere else because we couldn’t reach him on phone. He has been making unusual movements in recent weeks,” the official said.
Last week, Malong issued a statement for the removal of Sunday as the spokesman of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A).
Sunday later claimed that Malong removed him because he was opposing his (Malong) growing relationship with the regime in Juba.
Malong’s spokeswoman Nyamach Chuol Nyang later on issued a statement explaining that Sunday has been doing illegal activities which can undermine the movement.
Sunday was eventually removed after announcing that he has removed Malong.
