Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Peter Mayen Majongdit who was removed from the ministerial position last November has announced his candidacy for the presidency, declaring his commitment to liberal democratic principles.
In a statement posted on his social media Facebook page, Mayen emphasized his belief in being a forward-looking president who cares about the welfare of the people. He also expressed his desire to break through the stalemate and suspicions that have gripped South Sudan’s policies abroad.
“…. I’m proud to say I am ready for presidential race in 2024,” Mayen wrote today.
Mayen has a long history of pollical service, having served as the minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management and leader of the Other Political Parties.
His announcement has already generated a lot of buzz, and many are eager to see how his campaign will unfold should the 2024 elections go ahead as promised by President Salva Kiir and his first deputy Riek Machar who is apparently ready to go to polls for presidency.
As South Sudan prepares for its first democratic elections, it is clear that the competition for the presidency will be fierce.
