JUBA – A South Sudan expert is warning that continued delay of the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement by the unity government in Juba will result in the extension of the transitional period and further delay to elections.
Abraham Kuol Nyuon, Professor of Political Science at the University of Juba, said the peace parties intend to prolong their stay in power and that is why, he said, they are reluctant to implement the peace deal.
“The delay in the formation of the state government, implementation of security arrangement and delay in coming up with reform structures stipulated in the peace agreement is the strategy used by these people (Unity government) to make sure that they extend the transitional period,” Kuol told Sudans Post in Juba on Tuesday.
Nyuon believes that the delay in the implementation of the peace deal will also jeopardize elections planned at the end of the transitional period.
“All the indicators that are happening within the country and within the context of the implementation of the current peace agreement shows that parties will not be able to adhere to timeframe, because mechanism that should be put in place for the elections to be done, have not been put in place,” he said.
“So when we are talking about beating the deadline of the elections due for 2023 is a dream that could not be realize very soon because mechanism that should be put in place for elections to be done are not been put in place,” he added.
