BENTIU – Local officials in South Sudan’s Unity State confirmed the completion of free eye surgeries for 397 cataract patients in Mayom County.
The campaign, funded by Samaritan’s Purse (SP), began on Feb. 22 and ended on Friday. The initiative aimed to help visually impaired people in Mayom County and surrounding areas.
Mayom County Commissioner Luka Chierey Kuich told Sudans Post today that the campaign was a success.
“397 patients were successfully operated in the campaign, and they came from different Payams [administrative divisions] of Mayom County,” he said.
“There are more than 397 patients on the waiting list who will undergo surgery around March 2024,” he added.
Nyabol Chuol Kai, an elderly woman who benefited from the surgery, expressed her gratitude.
“I can now see some people and their movements. I wish to regain effective sight,” she said.
“I am currently seeing your hand, observing its movement, and recognizing that person. I am hopeful that my vision will fully return after the wetness dries in my eyes,” she added.
