KHARTOUM, MAY 5, 2023 (SUDANS POST) –  A document circulating on social media is claiming that the head of the Sudanese army General Abdelfattah al Burhan has issued an order allowing former president Omar al Bashir to leave the country on medical grounds.

According to the document purported to have been signed by General Burhan, Omar al Bashir – who has been in jail since his ouster in 2019 – was now free to travel to any country of his choice abroad to seek medical treatment.

But when contacted by Sudans Post, a Sudanese diplomat at the country’s embassy in Juba rubbished the claim, saying that Burhan who is also the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council has not issued any order regarding those being detained including al Bashir.

“The claim that General Abdelfattah al Burhan has ordered the release of former President Omar al Bashir and allowed him to leave the country on medical grounds is completely false. We have not made any such decision,” the official who refused to be named said.

Sudans Post’s investigation team further found that the document is fake and bore a stamp date from September 2020.

In other words, the document was old and had been previously circulated on social media with a different date.

Al Bashir has been under detention at Kober Prison in Khartoum since his overthrow in 2019, and there has been no official announcement regarding his release or permission to leave the country.

The army said last week that the former president was at a military hospital prior to the outbreak of violence in Khartoum on April 15. There has not been further information as to if Al Bashir has been moved to another place after his colleagues were moved out of prison.
