Female teacher assaulted by learner’s relative after child expulsion

JUBA – Local government authorities in Owiny Ki Bul County of Eastern Equatoria State are investigating an incident in which the brother of a learner, expelled from school, allegedly attacked a teacher over the manner of the student’s expulsion.

The incident occurred at Alliance Nursery and Primary School in Owiny Ki Bul, Magwi County two weeks ago.

Madam Pasquina Amito, a teacher at the school, explained that the suspension of the learner occurred after a debate involving primary seven and six students.

She claimed the student, along with another, was sent home for failing to attend the debate and for using vernacular, which is prohibited by the school policy.

After the children resisted the punishment, they were directed by the head teacher to write an apology letter, but according to Amito, the letter was never submitted.

Amito said the two students—one boy and one girl—were called in front to speak, but neither showed up for the debate, prompting her to ask them to leave the room. She added that the European Union (EU) partners arrived in Owiny Ki Bul shortly after, calling them to a meeting.

While she was at the meeting, the brother of the girl who had been sent home came to the school looking for her. He then followed her to Owiny Primary School, where he allegedly assaulted her.

Amito urged fellow teachers to show tolerance toward students, emphasizing that not all learners will display respect, and called on parents to follow the proper channels rather than resorting to violence.

For his part, Mr. Onyango Joseph Okot, the Payam Administration of Owiny Ki Bul, stated that he did not fully understand the issue, despite receiving some information from a local women’s leader.

He said his office would visit the school on Wednesday to investigate the claims and seek a peaceful resolution, if possible.

It is unclear whether the case has been reported to the local police, as the teacher is still nursing injuries at home.
