JUBA — Fire outbreak at Juba’s busy Custom Market has resulted in millions of South Sudanese Pounds and goods being lost, traders have told Sudans Post.

Fire broke out at the market on Monday night and traders were telling Sudans Post that the reasons that let to the break outbreak was still unknown and that they will count their losses on Wednesday.

Speaking to Sudans Post this morning however, a Sudanese trader said tens of millions of pounds and goods worth millions have been lost in preliminary reports of losses.

“The amount of money that we lost is unknown yet, but millions of South Sudanese Pounds and goods worth millions have also been lost,” the trader who requested not to be named, said.

The trader further said most traders are fearing to report their losses such as cash burnt because of fear of reprisal as government would  take measures against hoarders.

“The problem that is making it difficult to cult the exact losses is that many of my colleagues are fearing that if we report the money lost, the government will not be happy because of claims of hoarding,” he said.

“But we are now trying our best to make sure that the total losses are counted, whether money or goods and I promise that by Wednesday, we will have a full confirmed report of those things court in fire,” he added.
