AWEIL – At least five young men have been arrested in Aweil Center County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, for allegedly robbing a shop in Aroyo on Saturday.
Police Director Garang Wol told Sudans Post today the suspects gained entry to the shop by breaking through the roof. They stole three million South Sudanese pounds (SSP), 24 cartons of biscuits, 22 cartons of cigarettes, and several beers, according to Wol.
“These young men admitted to the crime before a county court last week but were pardoned. However, they were apprehended again after a search revealed a trail of spilled sugar leading to a forest. There, they attempted to resist arrest from CID officers who fired warning shots into the air,” he said.
Wol explained that the stolen items belonged to an Ethiopian trader operating a shop in Aroyo, located far from Aweil Town.
He warned residents against targeting foreign and national businesses, emphasizing that “the law will take its course.”
Wol added that authorities are investigating the possibility of accomplices being involved in the robbery.
The Chairperson of the Traders’ Union, Mr. Guot Ugieth, expressed concern about the increasing number of such incidents.
“Similar robberies have been occurring since May,” Ugieth said. “Last week, a young businessman lost three million SSP in Madhol Payam, Aweil East County, after falling victim to thugs who stole the money during the night.”
Authorities are currently questioning the two suspects in custody. They are also working to identify the remaining four individuals believed to be involved in the robbery.
