LEER – A funeral in Panyijiar County, Unity State, turned into a tragedy on Friday after an unidentified group launched a revenge attack, leaving one person dead and three injured.

Speaking to Sudans Post on Sunday, Panyijiar County Commissioner Gabriel Majok Bol, confirmed the incident, stating that the unidentified assailants targeted a family mourning a relative who had died along the Kenyan border earlier in January.

The attack triggered a violent clash, resulting in the death of one assailant and injuries to two others.

No member of the targeted family were harmed.

Commissioner Majok identified the attackers as a group of armed youth suspected of criminal activity, reportedly hailing from the northern part of Panyijiar County.

“There was an exchange of gunfire when they gathered at home for the loss of their brother who died in Kenya,” Majok explained.

“We are currently deploying security forces to apprehend those who have instilled fear in our community following the incident on Friday,” he said.

Authorities have already arrested one individual allegedly involved in the attack and are actively searching for the remaining perpetrators.

“We are putting in strenuous efforts to apprehend those involved in these crimes,” Majok affirmed.

This violent incident adds to the security challenges that have plagued Panyijiar County throughout 2023, often involving armed youth engaged in criminal activities.

Authorities face the crucial task of restoring peace and fostering security within the community, addressing the underlying factors fueling violence and promoting peaceful conflict resolution.
