JUBA, JUNE 14, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Prominent civil society activist Edmund Yakani has furiously condemned the detention of Jacob Thon, the secretary-general the youth-led African People’s Congress (APC) party and questioned government commitment to free and fair elections.

Party officials speaking to Sudans Post yesterday said Thon was on Sunday lured to Rainbow Hotel in the country’s capital Juba and where he was pushed into a vehicle by suspected National Security Service (NSS) operatives.

In a statement this morning, Yakani who is the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) condemned the detention and questioned the commitment of the government to a free and fair elections.

“CEPO strongly condemned the arrest of the country youngest political leader and activist Jacob Thon who is Secretary General of African People’s Congress party,” Yakani said in the statement a copy of which was extended to Sudans Post.

“The act of illegal arrest of Jacob Thon is unacceptable and it is posting a threat to political freedom of association and assembly in the face of the country expected December 2024 national general elections,” he said, calling for arrest of those behind the detention.

The activist said that Thon’s arrest “is a clear demonstration of possible threats towards the forthcoming national general elections.”

He said that the detention of the youth politician is against President Kiir’s pledge in which he said in December last year that 2023 will be a year of peace and said that it is “is an absolute violation and undermining of the president good declaration for successful political transitional from violence to peace in the country.”

“If Jacob Thon the Secretary General of the African People’s Congress is in conflict with the law than he should brought before competent court of law for trial through due Leah process than if he is not in conflict with the law, the perpetrators behind his detention should free him immediately without any precondition,” he stressed.
