JUBA – South Sudan opposition commander and leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Kitgwang faction General Simon Gatwech Dual has issued an order promoting former SPLM-IO chapter head of Victoria in Australia, Nyajany Joshua Dei Wal, to the rank of Major General.

Nyajany was the head of the SPLM-IO mission to Australia, but was removed in 2019 by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny following controversy with members of the SPLM-IO there over her handling of the group’s mission.

Last year, the senior opposition official decided to change her loyalty from the Machar-led SPLM-IO to self-imposed leader of the SPLM-IO (Reformist) faction and former governor of the defunct Sobat State, Duer Tut Duer.

In yet another shift of allegiance, Nyajany defected from Duer Tut and decided to join the then emerging faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition Kitgwang faction led by General Simon Gatwech Dual who attempted to remove Machar as the head of the SPLM-IO.

Last month, she travelled from Australia, along with her husband, and visited General Simon Gatwech Dual in Magenis where an arrangement was reportedly made by the opposition commander to promote her.

In a decree this morning, General Gatwech said he has promoted Nyajany, a civilian, to the rank of Major General.

“Pursuance to the Kitgwang Declaration of 3rd August 2021, I, 1st Lt. Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual, the Interim Chairman and Commander in Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO), do hereby promote Nyajany Joshua Dei Wal to the rank of Major General,” Gatwech said in the decree a copy of which was obtained by Sudans Post.
