This comes a day after Gatwech issued a statement saying he has ceased taking orders from Machar. This was followed by a statement from Machar’s SPLA-IO spokesman Colonel Lam Paul Gabriel in which he made public that Machar had replaced General Simon Gatwech Dual with General Gabriel Duop Lam who will serve as an acting SPLA-IO military chief.
Speaking to Sudans Post from Magenis this afternoon, General Gatwech said recent statements from Machar’s officials that he has been replaced with General Duop Lam amounts to intimidation from President Salva Kiir’s government because he is working and advocating for the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
“Replacing me illegally means an intimidation from the government of Salva [Kiir] and I don’t take it because I cannot be replaced in the hotels. They are intimidating me because I am asking for the implementation of the security arrangements which they signed with their hands and I am not doing anything wrong,” he said.
Asked why he has ceased taking orders from Machar, General Gatwech said he cannot take orders from someone he accused of becoming an enemy of the SPLM-IO and said there is still time for Kiir and Machar to make up their mind if they were to fully implement the revitalized peace agreement.
“I cannot take orders from him anymore because he has become a part of the system the SPLM-IO has been fighting against. He is not in Juba to implement the revitalized peace agreement anymore, he is there as a person who is a part of the system, how can I take someone who is no longer a member of the SPLM-IO,” he added.
“Now, what we want is just the implementation of the agreement and they (Kiir and Machar) still have time to return to the implementation box of the revitalized peace agreement and I don’t have any problem with that, but they should not continue deceiving the people of South Sudan that they are currently working for peace,” he further added.
