JUBA – South Sudan opposition leader and former deputy army chief General Thomas Cirilo Swaka will on Saturday inaugurate a newly established decision-making institution of the National Salvation Front (NAS), a statement by the holdout opposition group said.

On March 2nd, 2021, General Cirilo established a political council known as ‘The Salvation Council‘ that has an equivalent role as a political bureau. On 4th March 2021, the holdout opposition leader appointed 61 officials to serve as members of the newly established political institution.

In a statement on Friday, the National Salvation Front said the inauguration process will take place on Saturday and will be administered by the NAS Chief Justice Kukur Lopita in presence of General Thomas Cirilo who will then give an address.

“The National Salvation Front (NAS) is set to inaugurate its Political Council (aka the Salvation Council) and swear-in its members who were appointed earlier this year,” the statement extended to Sudans Post reads in part.

“Chief Justice Kukur Lopita will preside over the swearing-in ceremony after which the Chairman and C-in-C is expected to address the newly sworn-in members of the Salvation Council,” the statement adds.

The National Salvation Front (NAS) is not a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement, but is currently in talks with the unity government in a process spearheaded by the Sant’Egidio Community of Rome in Italy.
