KHARTOUM – Sudanese deputy chairperson of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander of the Rapid Support Force (RSF) General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who is better known as Hemeti has issued an order for the establishment of a joint security force comprising members of the RSF and the Sudanese army to maintain security in the capital Khartoum.

This comes days after the former militia commander who is now regarded as the most strong man in Sudan came into disagreement with the army after suggestions that his forces should vacate the capital Khartoum or integrated into the army, something that has angered him causing fears of escalation between his heavily armed forces and the Sudanese army.

Quoting the decision of the President of the Transitional Sovereign Council number 125 for the year 2021 for the formation of the Supreme National Committee to follow up the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement, and the decision of the meeting of the committee head by the deputy chairperson of the Sovereign Council, Hemeti issued the order forming “a joint force to resolve security breaches in the capital and the states and impose the prestige of the state.”

According to the order by the powerful commander, the committee will be head by member of the Transitional Sovereign Council Lieutenant General Yasir Al-Atta and shall comprise of the Sudan Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Force, the police, the General Intelligence Service (GIS) and a legal counsel representing the attorney general.

The mandate of the joint force, the order reads in part, shall be to “develop an integrated vision for a plan to resolve security breaches and impose the prestige of the state in the capital and the states” and to “advice the state governors to form a joint force with the same composition….in coordination with the competent military and security agencies (the state or territory security committee).”
