In a statement issued on Monday, South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation welcomed the reopening of the embassies in Juba.

JUBA — The German and Norwegian embassies resumed operations in South Sudan on Monday, nearly three months after temporarily closing in March due to the worsening security situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The embassies temporarily closed down on 24 and 26 following tensions between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, which led to clashes between government forces and Nuer militia groups in Upper Nile.

The tension intensifies after an armed convoy led by top security officials, including the defense minister, entered Machar’s residence in Juba at night and disarmed his bodyguards and placed him under house arrest alongside his wife, Angelina Teny, the minister of interior.

In a statement issued on Monday, South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation welcomed the reopening of the embassies in Juba.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation welcomes the reopening of the embassies of the Kingdom of Norway and the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of South Sudan, following a brief period of closure,” it said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated their commitment to maintaining close diplomatic engagements with Germany and Norway.

“This development reflects the continued strength of the bilateral relationship and the shared commitment of both countries to maintaining close diplomatic engagements, which South Sudan is fully committed to taking further.”
