Makuac clarified in an exclusive interview with Sudans Post that the incident occurred on Wednesday at the Pabeen cattle camp. According to the police spokesman, the incident left two people dead, and three others, including the girl, injured.
The injured were transferred to Rumbek State Hospital for treatment.
Makuac explained that a group of young men from different cattle camps gathered for a traditional ceremony. One of the men reportedly gave his rifle to the young girl to hold while performing a cultural dance associated with praising bulls.
“Tragically, the girl accidentally shot another girl in the neck,” Makuac said.
The victim’s relatives, mistakenly believing her dead, attacked the group. While fleeing, two men were beaten to death and others sustained gunshot wounds.
The suspected shooter reportedly fled initially but was later apprehended by local chiefs at the cattle camp. She is currently awaiting transfer to Rumbek Central County police for investigation.
“The girl who was shot in the neck is receiving treatment at Rumbek State Hospital,” Makuac confirmed. “Administrators, chiefs, and youth leaders have intervened to calm the situation, which is now under control.”
Makuac added that the families of both victims belong to the same Nyang community but different sub-clans. He urged the community to avoid using illegal firearms and to properly safeguard weapons to prevent such tragedies.
“I advise people not to misuse guns if they are still in possession of them,” Makuac said.
