Gogrial East attack leaves three dead

KUAJOK – At least three people were shot dead by unknown assailants in Gogrial East County, Warrap State, over the weekend, raising fresh concerns about revenge killings in the restive state.

David Atem Matuop, Payam Administrator of Mangol Apuk, identified the deceased as Diing Ajak Diing, Deng Ayiet Deng, and Achuil Bol Ater. Three others were wounded in the attack.

In an interview with Sudans Post on Tuesday, Matuop said the assailants targeted a group of men fishing by a river and another individual at a cattle camp.

“The incident happened on Saturday when the three men were on their way to a fishing pond,” Matuop said. “They were shot, and two died on the spot.”

“Another man was shot at 11 p.m. at the cattle camp,” he continued. “Three others were also shot in the chest and are being treated for their injuries.”

Matuop urged residents to exercise caution, citing the possibility of further revenge attacks.

The killings highlight ongoing violence in Warrap, often fueled by cattle raiding and revenge killings. Despite government efforts to disarm armed youth, deaths continue to occur.

Communal clashes erupt frequently in the region, driven by disputes over resources like grazing land and water points.

Revenge killings are also common, with communities targeting each other in response to prior deaths. These cycles of violence often involve neighboring Unity and Lakes states.
