JUBA – The head of the South Sudan National Youth Union (SSNYU) Gola Boyoi Gola has said that he will step down from his position next month if youth council do not meet by the time specified in the body’s constitution.
This decision comes after the youth body’s third convention, scheduled for December to elect new leadership, was cancelled due to alleged interference from the national minister of youth and sport Albino Bol.
Speaking to reporters during a press conference in Juba on Monday, Gola said that if the youth council do not meet in December as required, he would hand over the leadership to the ministry of youth and sport on December 11, 2023.
“We are now preparing for the council sitting that is supposed to take place on 9, 10, and 11 of December because our constitution required that at the end of the term, the council meeting should be called by the executive and form a preparatory committee and dissolve the union and that sitting required two-third majority of the council members,” he said.
“If we failed to conduct elections on time, we are going to have council meetings on 9, 10, and 11 respectively and if we couldn’t reach the quorum that is required by the constitution then on 11 of December, we are going to make a press statement announcing the end of term in the office,” he added.
The senior youth official further said that the national ministry of youth and sport would then form a preparatory committee tasked with the responsibility of conducting a third national convention to elect new leadership.
“And from there we are going to hand over the ministry of youth and sport especially the youth council and they will be the ones to form a preparatory committee to conduct the third national convention,” Gola added.
