JUBA – South Sudan Civil Society Forum has advised the unity government to divert millions of dollars it spent on buying expensive V-8 and accommodating peace partners in hotels into implementation of the 2018 peace deal.
The 2018 peace deal has not been fully implemented due to a lack of funding to implement its ambitious provisions, including the unification of necessary unified forces.
“We have been told by the parties that our country has no resources to fund the implementation of the agreement, especially the security arrangements. However, we have seen hotels in Juba demanding millions of dollars of our national resources in accommodation bills from RTGoNU,” South Sudan Society Forum said in a statement on the status of peace implementation extended to Sudans Post yesterday.
“We equally witness heavy spending of our national resources on very expensive luxurious vehicles. With priorities, these resources would have helped in implementation of many aspects of the agreement,” the group added.
The group, however, called on the government to hold to account senior army generals and political elites accused by the UN of fueling inter-communal violence by providing weapons to civilians.
“The country is yet to witness any action taken by the R-TGoNU to hold to account individuals or groups responsible for the flow of combat grade weapons to civilians involved in killings, cattle theft, abductions of women and children and destruction of villages,” it stated.
The group said that they don’t see a clear political agenda to move the country out of its current situation.
“There is no clear political agenda and direction for our country. The R-ARCSS as a political program has not been fully implemented,” it said.
