The campaign will distribute 255,000 doses of oral cholera vaccine across the ten payams of Mayom County, according to John Mut Bol, director general in the Unity State Ministry of Health.
Mut confirmed to Sudans Post in an interview today the campaign’s launch and urged citizens to get vaccinated.
He also encouraged residents of Mayom town to continue practicing preventative measures even after receiving the vaccine. Unity State recorded 13,695 cholera cases and 336 deaths in November.
“We have to do more, and that is the reason why we put more vaccination centers in the northern and southern sides of Mayom County,” Mut said. “For us to avoid this cholera, we must observe the preventive measures, and this will help us overcome this disease.”
The vaccination campaign will last for seven days.
Mut emphasized that Guit and Koch counties were the most affected areas in Unity State but added that cases are still increasing in Leer County and some other areas.
Yar William, a resident of Mayom who received the vaccine, said he decided to get vaccinated to protect himself from the disease that has killed hundreds in Unity State.
“I took the vaccine simply because it will protect me from this disease that is disturbing the state and other parts of the country,” William said.
William added that he had not experienced any side effects or complications from the vaccine and urged others to get vaccinated. The campaign will run for seven days, concluding next Thursday.
