JUBA – South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) has released SPLA-IO general who was detained by the army in Tonj in July following minor clashes in the area, according to several SPLA-IO officials.

General Gabriel Bol Wek was arrested while on a mission to Wau where he would have attended the reception of governor Sarah Cleto Rial of Western Bahr el Ghazal state who was nominated by the SPLA-IO.

In different emails to Sudans Post, SPLA-IO officers including politicians said Wek was released this morning after a joint committee constituted by Kiir and Machar last month reached an understanding to release the opposition officer.

“The committee which was formed this month by President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar Teny has agreed to reach an understanding and release the officer,” one SPLA-IO officer told Sudans Post from Juba.

Another opposition official said the “SPLA-IO has released all the people who were under its custody.”
