JUBA – Over 105 people have died as a result of gun-related violence in South Sudan’ Lakes State this year alone, according to data acquired by Sudans Post based on interviews with state authorities.
Lakes State has been experiencing waves of inter-communal violence, mainly fueled by revenge attacks, cattle raiding, and banditry that has thrived in the state for many years without government taking control of the situation.
The latest incident happened yesterday, June 15, when a mother and her son were gunned down at Pacong Payam of Rumbek East in Lakes State by unknown gunmen.
On 8 June, two aid workers working for Doctors with Africa CUAMM were killed when their vehicle was ambushed in Yirol West.
June 13, Inter-communal clashes in Rumbek East left 13 people killed and 16 others wounded.
14 June, 17 people were killed and 22 others wounded in another communal fighting over the weekend.
21 May, five people were killed in two separate cattle-related incidents in Yirol East and Aluak-luak of Yirol West County.
27 May, three people, including soldiers, were killed and several others wounded in two separate suspected communal clashes in Yirol East and Rumbek Central counties.
18 April, 22 people were killed and several others wounded in fighting that erupted between two tribal sections. The clashes were reported at three areas – Kuet-douang, Mai-nyaleng, and Manyang Riel – some 20 miles from Rumbek town.
23 April, 20 civilians were killed and several others wounded in clashes over elopement in Annuol Payam of Yirol West.
28 April, two breastfeeding mothers were shot dead by suspected armed raiders from Yirol West County.
2 March, nine people were killed in attacks allegedly orchestrated by armed civilians.
2 February, more than seven including four soldiers killed in cattle-related violence.
On 14 February, unknown gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying a polio vaccination team and supplies from Rumbek Centre to Rumbek North, Lakes state, killing 3 humanitarian workers and leaving 4 wounded.
26 February, two people were killed and one injured in a road ambush along the Amok-piny – Paloch road. The police have identified those killed as 29-year-old Mangor Chol Marial and 32-year-old Mawan Machar Reech.
