JUBA – A gunman has shot and wounded Miss Deaf Africa South Sudan Josephine Kiden Simon who represented South Sudan in Tanzania in 2021, several eyewitnesses and family members have told Sudans Post.

One eyewitness who refused to be named said the young woman was shot in her right hand while walking in a public space at Konyokonyo market on Wednesday evening and was rushed to a local hospital where she is receiving medication.

“She was walking with a friend and in a public space and then she was shot and she was rushed to the hospital by pedestrian, but now I don’t have any more information about her situation but I think she is getting better,” one eyewitness said.

When contacted by Sudans Post, police spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin confirmed the incident, but said investigations were ongoing and the public will be updated when information as to why she was shot is available.

“Yes, I can confirm that. She was shot in the arm and no suspect has been apprehended but we conducting investigation to try to identify the culprit and once we have the information, we will update the public,” Gen. Justin said.

‘ATTEMPT TO KILL’

In a statement to Sudans Post, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment Organization (CEPO) Edmund Yakani, condemned the attempt to take Ms. Josephine’s life and urged law enforcement agencies to pursue the culprit to bring him to justice.

“CEPO strongly condemns the attempt to kill Miss Deaf Africa 2021. This is criminal act and the government should pursue the perpetrator seriously and bring him/her or them to book. This is totally unacceptable act and act of enemies of human progress and societal development,” Yakani said.

The outspoken activist further said “the suspect being his act of shooting Miss Deaf Africa is total criminal and should be punished by a competent court of law immediately once he is or she is arrested by the police.”
