JUBA – Heavy fighting broke out on Tuesday morning at a cantonment site belonging to the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), the group said, accusing government forces of launching attacks.
In a statement, SPLA-IO spokesman Colonel Lam Paul Gabriel said their base in Morono County, Central Equatoria state, was attacked from multiple directions by the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).
The Panyume cantonment site has been an SPLA-IO location since 2020 and is the capital of Panyime Payam.
“The SSPDF has attacked Panyume cantonment site from multiple directions this morning. Clashes are still ongoing and details will follow later,” he wrote on Facebook.
