Members of the Joint Demarcation Committee met on Thursday in the Sudanese Capital Khartoum in line with a decision of the African Union Peace and Security Council, and the UN Security Council which called for peaceful resolution of border disputes between Sudan and South Sudan.
The Co-chair of South Sudan Joint Demarcation Committee, Amb. Darious Garang Wol said the committee will work hard to resolve the issue of border dispute, and claimed areas between the two countries.
“The current political status between South Sudan and Sudan may contribute positively on the work of the Committee in resolving outstanding issues,” Garang said.
The demarcation of the South-North Sudan’s borders will base as it stood on January 1, 1956 which is in line with the implementation of the decision of the Joint Border Commission between the Sudan and South Sudan.
The two countries contest several border regions, namely, Kaka, the commercial area, Dabba al-Fukhar and al-Muqis, the 14th mile south of the Arabian Sea, Hafrat al-Nahas, Kafi Kanji, Heglig, Jebelen and the Abyei region.
