The ban was issued in Resolution No. 262/2025 of the State Security Committee, dated April 16, 2025, following deliberations chaired by Governor Kok.
The resolution cited concerns regarding “the appearance of civilians who use to move in Bor town carrying guns and some wearing different uniforms of the organized forces.”
The implementation and enforcement of the security order have been entrusted to the State Police Service, National Security Service, State Military Police, and local Block leaders and their chiefs.
Speaking to Sudans Post on Monday, James Akech Mapiou, Jonglei state police public relations officer, stated that the implementation of the order had begun.
“Yesterday the first phase of the implementation of the order has been done were the announcement was made across the state capital Bor town that carrying guns with in the territory of Bor municipality,” Akech said.
Akech emphasized that the state government believes the availability of firearms in the hands of civilians is a cause of the prevalent insecurity in the state capital.
“Many cases have been reported especially during the disagreements during marriages like what recently happen between the Malual community and Angakuei community where one person after the disagreement in the marriage,” Akech added.
He further stated, “By Tuesday police or all organized force would have security check points in all the entries of the Bor town to check and observe who those are entering to the town with the firearm.”
The resolution, signed by Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok, who also chairs the State Security Committee, is a direct measure aimed at reducing the presence of unauthorized arms and dangerous implements in public areas within Jonglei’s capital and nearby ports.
