BOR – The government of South Sudan’s Jonglei State has launched a major agricultural project aimed at boosting food security and creating jobs, officials said on Wednesday.

The Jonglei Agricultural Farm Project was officially launched by the state governor, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, in collaboration with Senior Presidential Advisor Kuol Manyang Juuk at a ceremony held at proposed farmlands in areas including Baidit and Jalle.

The initiative focuses on the entire food value chain and aims to significantly increase agricultural productivity within the state.

Kuol Manyang Juuk, who presided over the ceremony, said the launch marked the beginning of an “agricultural revolution” in the region.

“The reforms we have implemented are designed to elevate agriculture as the primary pillar of the state’s economy,” Manyang said in his address.

“We recognize the vast potential of the agricultural sector and its significant impact on the overall development of Jonglei State. Consequently, we have put in place a series of strategic measures to actively promote and support agricultural activities,” he added.

He recalled Jonglei State’s past agricultural prosperity, stating, “Jonglei State was once a major source of agricultural wealth in the eastern region. Our deliberate policies aim to reignite this agricultural revolution within the state.”

Governor Riek Gai Kok reiterated his administration’s commitment to transitioning from subsistence farming to mechanized agriculture through the acquisition of machinery.

“This initiative will support small-scale farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs in expanding the production of key crops such as wheat, onions, tomatoes, maize, rice, cassava, mangoes, sugarcane, coffee, and bananas. Our goal is to significantly improve food security across the state,” he explained.

The governor also commended the residents of Mathiang Boma in Baidit Payam for maintaining peace in the area, noting progress in fostering inter-community harmony and socio-economic development.

He urged all stakeholders to collaborate to achieve food security in Jonglei State.

“My administration is determined to sustain the momentum of this launch and even surpass its initial goals,” Governor Riek affirmed. “We are here to work alongside you. We will provide all the necessary support you require.”

Riek emphasized that the project would expand to other designated locations for a wider variety of crops, with the primary mission being to serve the people.
