BOR – A road in Jonglei State has been renamed after the Central Bank Governor.

Bor Municipality Council mayor, in provisional order No. 15/2024, renamed the road from Pakwau highway to Central Bank of South Sudan, Bor branch to Dr. James Alic Garang road.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under section 57 read together with section 40 of the Local Government Act. 2009, I John Tiopich Achiek, the Mayor of Bor Municipality Council do hereby issue this provisional order for renaming of the road from Pakwau highway to Central Bank of South Sudan, Bor branch to Dr. James Alic Garang road,” partly reads the 10 February, 2024 order.

A separate provisional order No. 16/2024 witnessed the renaming of the road from Hai-Machuor highway connecting to Malual-chaat as H.E Denay Jock Chagor road.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under section 57 read together with section 40 of the Local Government Act. 2009, I John Tiopich Achiek, the Mayor of Bor Municipality Council do hereby issue this provisional order for renaming of road from Hai-Machuor highway connecting to Malual-chaat as H. H.E Denay Jock Chagor road,” it noted.

Both orders, according to the mayor, took effect from the signed dates.

Reacting to the provisional orders, Bol Deng Bol said Section 40 and Section 57 of the Local Government Act, 2009 as cited in these orders do not really seem to resonate.

“Anyways, there is a need for an amendment of this Act to be clear on whose responsibility and the procedures in naming or re-naming streets/roads in towns or municipalities across the country. Otherwise, the process is marred with ambiguity and lacks adequate legal backing,” he wrote.
