BOR, SEPTEMBER 29, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Teachers in South Sudan’s Jonglei State have locked the gate of the ministry of finance in protest of unpaid salaries and the government’s closure of their bank account.

The teachers have been on strike for several weeks, and their demands have not been met. They are calling on the government to pay them their salaries immediately and to reopen their bank account.

The closure of the bank account has made it difficult for teachers to access their salaries.

The teachers say that the government’s decision to close the account violates an order by President Kiir in 2021 which provides for a new bank account for the ministry of general education where teachers’ salaries would be kept.

“The state government turned deaf ears to us and that’s why we have made the decision to lock the gate of the state ministry of finance,” one teacher told Sudans Post.

The strike has disrupted government operations, and many people are unable to access services at the finance ministry.

The government has called on the teachers to end their strike and return to work, but the teachers have refused to do so until their demands are met.
