NAIROBI, JULY 5, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s veteran Anyany leader and former Sudanese Vice-President Joseph Lagu is doing well in hospital in Kenya, according to a diplomat.
South Sudan’s ambassador to Kenya Chol Ajongo visited Lagu in the hospital on Thursday in the capital Nairobi and said that he is “doing very well.”
Lagu, 94, was hospitalized last month for an undisclosed illness.
He is a former military leader and politician who played a key role in the fight for South Sudan’s independence.
He was the leader of the Anyanya, the rebel army that fought against the Sudanese government from 1950s to early 1972.
After the signing of the Addis Ababa Peace Agreement in 1972, Lagu served as Sudan’s vice president.
By 2011 when South Sudan gained its independence, Lagu retired from politics.
